Secretary of State visits The Open University

13 December 2007

John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, visited the OU's headquarters in Milton Keynes on Thursday, December 13 to speak to staff about the ELQ funding issue. More than 500 members of staff attended the live event and relay broadcasts on other parts of the campus. Another 400 people logged on to watch the event via a special webcast.

After he outlined the Government's reasons for making the funding change, the Secretary of State took questions from staff, who raised their concerns about the potential impact on part-time students, lifelong learning and those who need to update their skills and knowledge in order to change career or move on in an existing career.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brenda Gourley, then spoke privately with the Secretary of State to express again the concerns of students, staff and alumni about the ELQ funding proposals.
