OU petition against ELQ changes tops 18,000 names as more than 200 MPs back the OU campaign in Parliament
17 December 2007
More than 18,000 people have now signed the Downing Street website petition that calls on the Prime Minister to withdraw the instruction to the funding council to cease institutional funding for ELQ students.
A surge in signatures over the past few weeks was sparked by appeals from the Open University Students Association to encourage students, alumni, staff, friends and family to add their names to the petition. It is now the 10th most signed petition on the Downing Street petition.

And at Westminster, 211 MPs - from all the main political parties - signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) that raised concerns about the impact of the proposed change on part-time students. At the time, no other current Early Day Motion had more signatories. The EDM also urged the Government to consider ways in which it can minimise the damage the measure would do to lifelong learning.
